Ahmedabad: In a development that’s reigniting public scrutiny, 86-year-old spiritual leader Asaram, convicted in rape cases from Surat and Jodhpur and currently serving a life sentence, was admitted to Ahmedabad Civil Hospital on Monday for an urgent medical evaluation due to his deteriorating health. Hospital staff have initiated a thorough examination, prompting authorities to restrict public access to the outpatient department (OPD) for security reasons. Sources note that Asaram was previously under intensive care at Indore’s Jupiter Hospital.

The Gujarat and Rajasthan High Courts have stepped in, granting extensions to his interim bail citing his grave medical condition. Following a hearing on August 8, the Rajasthan High Court prolonged the bail until August 29. Meanwhile, the Gujarat High Court, handling the Surat case, extended it to August 21 after proceedings on August 7 – marking the third such extension from that bench. Asaram’s legal team requested the continuations based on health concerns, submitting supporting documents from hospitals and physicians. A follow-up hearing is scheduled for August 21 in the Gujarat court.

Court-submitted medical reports describe Asaram’s state as highly precarious.
