Ahmedabad: Ahmedabad has been witnessing torrential rainfall since morning, with the south-west and north-west zones of the city bearing the brunt of heavy showers. Several areas across the city have been left waterlogged, stranding thousands of people who had stepped out for work in the morning. Many vehicles have stalled on flooded roads, and rainwater has accumulated at multiple locations, prompting authorities to advise residents against stepping out unless necessary.
Six Gates of Vasna Barrage Opened
Following heavy rainfall, the water level in the Sabarmati river rose to around 129 feet, prompting swift action from civic authorities. To bring the level down to 127 feet, officials coordinated with the Irrigation Department and opened six gates of the Vasna Barrage to release excess water.
Meanwhile, to ensure the safety of motorists amid severe waterlogging, the Makarba, Akhbarnagar, Mithakhali, Parimal, Jalaram and Shahibaug underpasses have been completely closed. The Usmanpura underpass was also partially closed at 11 am, disrupting traffic movement in the area.
Several Roads Submerged, Waist-Deep Water in Parts of the City
Multiple roads across Ahmedabad have gone under water. The GMDC Road has been closed after waist-deep water accumulated on it. Ghatlodia, Manav Mandir Road and several other stretches have also been inundated, along with areas including Jodhpur and Jivraj Park.
Nirnay Nagar Underpass Sees Waist-Deep Water
The situation has turned more severe with the Nirnay Nagar underpass filling up completely with rainwater, forcing a complete halt to traffic movement. With water levels reaching waist-height inside the underpass, authorities suspended all movement to prevent any untoward incident. The closure has cut off a key connecting route between surrounding localities, leaving commuters and local residents stranded.
Waist-Deep Water in Navrangpura
Heavy rainfall in Ahmedabad’s Navrangpura area has created a similar situation, with several major roads submerged. Traffic has come to a complete standstill after water levels reached waist-height, with visuals showing vehicles swept away or stalled on flooded streets. Roads resembling flowing rivers have left local residents and shopkeepers in serious difficulty.
Sindhu Bhavan Road Waterlogged
The city’s popular and upscale Sindhu Bhavan Road has also gone under water following the heavy rain. Extensive waterlogging at multiple points along the road has caused difficulties for motorists and residents, raising questions over the civic body’s drainage arrangements in what is considered one of Ahmedabad’s premium smart-city localities. Several vehicles have been seen partially submerged.
Bopal’s Sterling City Area Waterlogged
The situation in Bopal has also turned difficult due to the heavy downpour, with housing societies in the upscale Sterling City area witnessing severe waterlogging. Knee-deep water in Sectors 1 and 2 of Sterling City has forced local residents to remain confined to their homes, with water spreading across common plots and internal roads, causing significant hardship for residents and motorists alike.
Gota Area Waterlogged
Heavy rainfall has left the Gota area completely waterlogged, with water reaching up to the gates of housing societies along the main roads. Visuals showed roads resembling flowing rivers, causing several vehicles to stall. The lack of adequate drainage arrangements has caused significant hardship for local residents and motorists.
Four Underpasses Closed, Including Parimal and Usmanpura
With waterlogging reported across the city, a total of four underpasses have been closed to traffic for safety reasons. The Usmanpura and Parimal underpasses were shut after water accumulated inside them, leading to traffic jams on major roads across the city and considerable difficulty for motorists.
Waterlogging Opposite Karnavati Club, S.G. Highway Situation Worsens
The situation along S.G. Highway has turned severe, with the main road opposite Karnavati Club going under water. Areas near the newly built overbridge have seen 1.5 to 2 feet of water accumulation, slowing traffic and stalling several vehicles. The civic body’s pre-monsoon preparedness has come under scrutiny amid the flooding, drawing sharp criticism from residents.
Road Towards Usmanpura Closed After Flooding Near Lakhudi Lake
The situation in Usmanpura has worsened after heavy waterlogging outside Lakhudi Lake brought traffic to a halt. With conditions turning serious, authorities were forced to close the road leading towards Usmanpura. With 1.5 to 2 feet of water on the road, several motorists were forced to turn back midway. Commuters heading towards Usmanpura and Lakhudi Lake are advised to avoid this route and use alternative roads.
Waterlogging in Nava Vadaj Sparks Local Anger
Heavy waterlogging has been reported near Bharat Mata Circle in Nava Vadaj, severely affecting traffic movement and causing considerable trouble for residents and motorists. Despite a new RCC road having been recently built in the area, the first rain of the season turned it into what residents described as a lake-like situation, prompting sharp criticism of the civic administration.

Rainwater has also entered the D-Cabin Kaligam area, with water entering the Kaligam Health Centre itself, causing significant difficulty for patients and medical staff. Waterlogging on public roads has triggered traffic jams across the city, with civic authorities working to drain the accumulated water.

All Areas of Ahmedabad Affected
Continuous heavy rainfall over the past two hours has disrupted normal life across the city, with knee-deep water reported on roads in several areas. Localities affected include S.G. Highway, Vastrapur, Shivranjani, Bopal, Ghuma, Helmet Char Rasta, Gurukul, AEC Char Rasta, Naranpura, Shastrinagar, Akhbarnagar, Nava Vadaj, Shela and Sarkhej, among others.
2 Inches of Rain in a Matter of Hours
According to municipal corporation data, Sarkhej and Bodakdev wards received close to 2 inches of rainfall within a short span. In addition, the south-west zone recorded over 1 inch of rainfall, while the north-west zone also recorded around 1 inch of widespread rain.
