Cancer’s Deadly Toll Rising in Gujarat: Over 43,000 Deaths in One Year, Cases Up 10% in Five Years

Ahmedabad: Gujarat has recorded a worrying 10 percent rise in both cancer cases and cancer-related deaths over the past five years. According to the data, the state logged 79,000 new cancer cases in the last year alone, while more than 43,500 patients lost their lives to the disease. Looking at the current scale of the crisis, Gujarat is now seeing an average of 217 new cancer patients every day, while 119 people are losing their battle with the disease daily.
10% Worrying Rise Over 5 Years; Gujarat Ranks 9th Nationally In Cancer Deaths
A comparison with 2021 figures shows the scale of the increase. That year, the state recorded 71,507 cancer cases and 39,238 deaths. By 2025, both cancer cases and death rates had risen by a direct 10 percent. Compared with figures from across the country, 2025 data places Gujarat ninth on the list of states with the highest cancer deaths. Uttar Pradesh tops that list, recording the highest number of cancer deaths at 1.25 lakh.
Oral Cancer Most Common Among Men, Breast Cancer Among Women At Ahmedabad Civil
Data from the Cancer Hospital at Ahmedabad’s Civil Medicity, current up to November 2025, shows that oral cancer was the most common cancer among men, with 1,931 cases recorded up from 1,726 in 2021. Among women, breast cancer remained the most prevalent, with cases rising from 1,385 in 2021 to 1,456 in 2025.
Ahmedabad Emerges As A Ray Of Hope For Patients From Other States Too
During 2025, more than 26,810 new cancer patients were registered at Ahmedabad’s Civil Cancer Hospital. Notably, of this total, 9,147 patients travelled from outside Gujarat for treatment. Among out-of-state patients, the largest numbers came from Madhya Pradesh (4,572), followed by Rajasthan (2,678), Uttar Pradesh (1,064), Bihar (288), and Maharashtra (279).
