Gujarat Police Scraps Police-Station Visits for Passport Verification, DGP Announces New Rules
Ahmedabad: Passport applicants in Gujarat can expect a smoother verification process after Director General of Police (DGP) Gyanendra Singh Malik announced new guidelines aimed at making passport verification faster, simpler and more transparent. Under the revised system, most applicants will no longer need to visit a police station as part of the process, a move meant to cut down on unnecessary delays and make the procedure more citizen-friendly.
What Changes Under the New Rules
The updated instructions specify that police officers now only need to verify two things during the passport verification process: an applicant’s citizenship and their criminal history.
Officers have been directed not to conduct separate address verification as part of this process. They are also no longer required to summon applicants to the police station, meet them face-to-face, or collect their signatures during routine checks.
Home Visits Reserved for Exceptional Cases
Under the new guidelines, police officers will visit an applicant’s residence only if they come across suspicious information or need to carry out additional checks. Even in these exceptional cases, applicants should not be asked to report to the police station any further verification is to be handled through field visits instead.
Gujarat Police has instructed all police stations and officers across the state to strictly comply with the revised guidelines. Senior officials say the changes will cut down on unnecessary paperwork, improve efficiency and speed up the verification process, all while keeping security checks intact.
Authorities have also urged citizens to familiarise themselves with the new process and avoid going through any unnecessary steps. The simplified system is expected to make passport verification more convenient, save applicants time, and offer a smoother overall experience without compromising on security or transparency.
