Ahmedabad has been drenched by significant monsoon rainfall, receiving approximately 17 inches of precipitation by July 29, 2025, according to data from the India Meteorological Department (IMD). This figure accounts for 62% of the city’s average seasonal rainfall, signaling a robust monsoon season. The heavy showers, which began intensifying in late July, have brought both relief and challenges to the region.
Over the past 24 hours, several areas of Ahmedabad, including Prahladnagar, Anandnagar, SG Highway, Shivranjani, Thaltej, Shela, Bopal, Isanpur, CTM, and Ghodasar, experienced substantial downpours. The IMD issued an orange alert for Ahmedabad, indicating the likelihood of continued heavy rain, while a red alert was declared for six other Gujarat districts Banaskantha, Patan, Mehsana, Sabarkantha, Aravalli, and Kheda due to expectations of extremely heavy rainfall between 7 a.m. and 10 a.m. on Sunday, July 27. Additionally, a yellow alert was issued for Devbhumi Dwarka, Porbandar, Gir Somnath, Amreli, Botad, and Bhavnagar, signaling moderate rainfall with potential disruptions.
The broader state of Gujarat has also been significantly impacted by the monsoon’s vigor. By July 29, the state recorded 468.4 mm of rainfall, equating to 62% of its seasonal average. The distribution of rain has been uneven, with Banaskantha receiving 85% of its typical rainfall, while Chhota Udepur and Surat lag behind at 49% and 36%, respectively. Among Gujarat’s 33 districts, seven have seen excessive rainfall, 18 are categorized as having above-normal precipitation, seven are near normal, and only one district remains rain-deficient.
The IMD forecasts a slight reduction in rainfall intensity starting July 30, though light to moderate showers with thunderstorms are expected across most of Gujarat until August 3. Isolated heavy rainfall is anticipated in districts such as Anand, Vadodara, Panchmahal, Dahod, Bharuch, Narmada, Chhota Udepur, Surat, Tapi, Navsari, Dang, and Valsad. This ongoing wet spell underscores the active monsoon system driven by a weather formation over the Arabian Sea, as noted by the IMD.
