Ahmedabad: Ahmedabad’s scorching heatwave is taking a measurable toll on public health. Sola Civil Hospital recorded 11,808 outpatient department (OPD) visits in just one week, as rising temperatures pushed residents toward fever, dehydration-linked illnesses, and vector-borne infections.
Diarrhoea, Fever, and Viral Cases Spike
The heat and humidity have driven a sharp rise in complaints of diarrhoea, vomiting, fever, dizziness, and headaches across the city. Over the past month, Sola Civil recorded 143 cases of diarrhoea and vomiting. Fever cases prompted the collection of 125 suspected dengue samples, of which 3 tested positive. Of 451 malaria samples tested, 9 returned positive. One case of swine flu has also been confirmed.
1,100 Patients Required Hospitalisation
According to the hospital’s medical officer, of the approximately 11,000 patients who sought treatment in the past week, 1,100 required admission due to the severity of their condition. The officer noted, however, that no serious cases of heatstroke or dehydration have been reported so far.
The hospital administration said it has made adequate arrangements to handle the surge sufficient staff, medicines, ORS packets, and specially reserved emergency beds for heat-related cases are in place.
How to Stay Safe in the Heat
- Always drink boiled water and avoid consuming open or uncovered food and beverages from outside.
- Avoid stepping out in direct sunlight between 12 noon and 4 pm as far as possible.
- When going outdoors, keep your face and body covered. Wearing light-coloured, cotton clothing is advisable.
