Ahmedabad Crime Branch JCP Sharad Singhal Stabbed During Interrogation; Accused Shot in Leg After Retaliatory Firing

A Joint Commissioner of Police (JCP) with the Ahmedabad Crime Branch was injured after an accused allegedly attacked him with a knife during interrogation in a dramatic incident linked to an illegal arms case in the city’s Chandola Lake area.

According to officials, the accused, identified as Mohammad Kaleem alias Bhaiya Akbarkhan Pathan, allegedly stabbed Crime Branch JCP Sharad Singhal in the hand while attempting to evade police action. In retaliation, the officer fired his service revolver, hitting the accused in the leg.

Accused attacks JCP during questioning

Police said Crime Branch officers had detained Kaleem, a history-sheeter and resident of Isanpur, based on intelligence inputs regarding the illegal trafficking of firearms.

He was being questioned by JCP Sharad Singhal and Police Inspector I.N. Ghasura when he suddenly turned violent. During the interrogation, the accused allegedly pulled out a knife that he had concealed and attacked JCP Singhal, injuring him.

JCP opens fire in self-defence

Following the knife attack, a scuffle broke out between the accused and police personnel. During the confrontation, JCP Singhal fired his service revolver, and the bullet struck the accused in the leg. Both the injured officer and the accused were immediately shifted to a hospital for treatment. Police said four illegal firearms were recovered from Kaleem’s possession.

According to officials, the accused has a criminal history of more than 30 cases, including murder, attempted murder, robbery and extortion.

Two fresh cases to be registered

Senior police officers, including all Deputy Commissioners of Police (DCPs), the JCPs of Sector 1 and Sector 2, reached the Civil Hospital following the incident.

Speaking about the attack, JCP Sharad Singhal said the team led by PI I.N. Ghasura had received information that the notorious accused had arrived near Chandola carrying illegal weapons.

After his arrest, police recovered four country-made pistols and ammunition that had allegedly been brought from Madhya Pradesh.

“When we reached to interrogate the accused, he attacked me with a kitchen knife. I have received treatment at the Civil Hospital, and the accused is also undergoing treatment,” Singhal said. He added that two separate cases would be registered against the accused under the Arms Act and for attempt to murder.

JCP Singhal also stated that he was not wearing his police uniform during the interrogation, due to which the accused did not recognise him.
