Veteran Filmmaker Kuku Kohli Passes Away At 77

Veteran director Kuku Kohli passed away on Tuesday after suffering a severe heart attack. His 1991 film Phool Aur Kaante marked the beginning of Ajay Devgn’s Bollywood career. He was 77 years old.

“Yesterday, he was brought to Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital due to discomfort. He was feeling uncomfortable and was therefore admitted to Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital yesterday. He passed away due to a massive heart attack around 4:30 pm.” Kohli’s friend Ashoke Pandit, a filmmaker, told the news agency PTI.

Kohli, whose real name was Avtar Kohli, worked under Raj Kapoor and other filmmakers before making his directorial debut with Phool Aur Kaante, which also marked the beginning of Devgn’s career in the industry.

He then went on to direct films such as KohrramSuhaagHaqeeqatAnari No.1Yeh Dil Aashiqanaa and Woh Tera Naam Tha. He is survived by his actor wife Aruna Irani and two daughters from a previous marriage.

The final rites will be held today at the Oshwira crematorium.
