Bollywood actor Ranveer Singh has firmly opposed any role for the Indian Motion Picture Producers’ Association (IMPPA) in the ongoing dispute over his exit from Don 3, insisting that the matter should be resolved only by a court if the parties cannot settle it privately.
The controversy stems from Singh’s decision to walk out of the film, produced by Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani under Excel Entertainment, just weeks before shooting was scheduled to begin in late 2025. The producers have claimed approximately Rs 45 crore in damages, citing pre-production expenses, location bookings, and other costs incurred. After earlier mediation attempts and a short-lived non-cooperation directive by the Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE) that was later withdrawn, the producers took the complaint to IMPPA.
At recent IMPPA meetings, including one on August 18, 2026, Singh’s legal team submitted a formal defence. They argued that only a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) had been signed, not a full-fledged contract, and therefore Excel Entertainment had limited grounds for the compensation demand. The team further maintained that the dispute falls outside IMPPA’s jurisdiction and urged the body to dismiss the complaint, stating that only the courts are competent to decide such contractual matters. The actor’s side also warned that any adverse resolution by IMPPA could prompt legal action from Singh.
IMPPA president Abhay Sinha confirmed that both sides have presented their versions and that the association’s legal team is currently examining the documents before deciding the next course. Singh’s father, Jagjit Singh Bhavnani, has also engaged with the body on his behalf.
The standoff highlights deeper questions about the authority of industry associations versus formal legal processes in Bollywood contract disputes. With both parties holding firm positions, the Don 3 row appears headed toward a possible courtroom battle rather than an internal industry resolution.
