Veteran actress Susmita Mukherjee has opened up about one of the most difficult phases of her career, revealing that financial hardship forced her to accept projects she later regretted. Known for her roles in films such as Golmaal Returns, King Uncle, Khalnayak and Dostana, the 61-year-old shared a candid video monologue on social media about the choices she made after her family’s production company collapsed.
In 2002, Mukherjee and her husband lost their media company, Prayas Production. A loan of Rs 1 crore remained unpaid. “Along with us, Track Cinema and Anil Chaudhary Production, we all went bankrupt,” she said. The actress explained that a new era of technology had arrived, bringing concepts like angel investment and venture capital that they did not understand, leading to the company’s failure.
The aftermath was severe. Recovery agents frequently visited their home and abused them while their children were still very young. “It was a very bad time,” she recalled. Forced to return to work, Mukherjee said every rupee she earned went towards clearing the debt. She and her husband worked hard for three to four years before finally repaying the loan.
During this period, she accepted several sexist and C-grade films that she described as derogatory to women. “Did I sell my soul? Of course I sold my soul. Did I feel good about it? I didn’t feel good then. I still don’t feel good about it, but it was my helplessness,” she admitted. Mukherjee clarified that these were not pornographic films but simply bad career choices driven by financial necessity.
Her revelations highlight the harsh realities many actors face when personal and professional crises collide. Despite the painful memories, Mukherjee’s honesty has resonated with fans who appreciate her courage in speaking about a chapter she still finds difficult to revisit.
