Ranbir Kapoor Said Why He Wouldn’t Dance At Weddings For Money: “I Don’t Want To Lose My Dignity”

In an era where Bollywood heavyweights like Shah Rukh Khan and Ranveer Singh command top billing at extravagant nuptials, one star stands apart: Ranbir Kapoor. A resurfaced 2011 interview clip with Times Now reveals the actor’s firm stance against performing for pay at weddings, rooted in a commitment to personal integrity that he credits to his family’s legacy.

Kapoor, scion of a cinematic dynasty as the son of the late Rishi Kapoor and Neetu Kapoor, grandson of the legendary Raj Kapoor, and great-grandson of Prithviraj Kapoor, articulated his position clearly. “I wouldn’t do it because of the family I come from,” he stated. “Having said that, I’m not against the people who do it. But it’s not the values I’ve been brought up with.”

Pressed on whether such gigs undermine an actor’s stature, Kapoor elaborated on his motivations. “There’s nothing wrong,” he conceded regarding the practice, which icons like Shah Rukh Khan have publicly endorsed. “But money is not my drive. I don’t want to earn billions and billions. I’m an actor. My drive is different. My passions are different. I don’t want to lose my dignity in my eyes dancing at a wedding, with people standing with a glass of alcohol, and there could be snide comments. I wouldn’t want any of my family members to do it. It’s a personal choice. I wouldn’t do it.”

He further emphasized boundaries for fame: “I wouldn’t lose stardom, but I wouldn’t allow my stardom to make me think that if I’m a star, I can do anything and get away with it.”

This philosophy contrasts sharply with the industry’s wedding circuit frenzy. Just days ago, on November 21–22, Ranveer Singh, Madhuri Dixit, Varun Dhawan, Shahid Kapoor, and Kriti Sanon lit up the opulent Udaipur ceremony of Netra Mantena and Vamsi Gadiraju. Netra, daughter of Rama Raju Mantena—chairman and CEO of Ingenus Pharmaceuticals, a key player in the U.S., Swiss, and Indian pharmaceutical sectors—hosted the affair for the NRI business magnate’s circle.

Earlier in November, Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan reunited for a star-studded Delhi wedding. Notably, Kapoor himself joined Bollywood’s elite last year at the Ambani-Merchant festivities for Anant Ambani and Radhika Merchant, though details suggest his involvement aligned with selective, non-commercial engagements.

As wedding invitations pour in for the elite, Kapoor’s words endure as a reminder of self-imposed lines in Tinseltown’s glittering temptations.
