Michael India Box Office Collection: Jaafar Jackson Biopic Crosses ₹20 Crore; Holds Steady Despite Weekday Dip

Antoine Fuqua’s much-anticipated Michael Jackson biopic Michael, featuring the pop icon’s nephew Jaafar Jackson in the lead role, has crossed the ₹20 crore milestone in India just five days after its April 24 theatrical release.

Trade website Sacnilk reports the film earned ₹2.19 crore net on Tuesday with 12% occupancy, pushing its cumulative domestic total to ₹20.94 crore. The film opened at ₹3.70 crore on its first day, having collected ₹1.70 crore from premieres alone.

Weekend Surge, Weekday Slide

Michael followed a predictable box office curve ₹5.25 crore on Saturday and ₹5.85 crore on its strongest day, Sunday, when occupancy peaked at 21%. Monday brought the expected weekday correction at ₹2.25 crore, with Tuesday holding close at ₹2.19 crore. Its lowest occupancy was recorded on Friday at 7%.

The film is holding its ground despite competition from Bollywood releases Bhooth Bangla and Dhurandhar 2. Its second-weekend performance will be the real test.

Catalogue Streams Surge in the US

The biopic’s release has sparked renewed interest in Jackson’s music stateside. According to Luminate data reported by AP, streams of Jackson’s catalogue jumped 95% in the US over the release weekend compared to the same dates the previous week 31.7 million streams on April 24–25 versus 16.3 million on April 17–18. Jackson 5 tracks saw an 85% spike, climbing from 1.3 million to 2.4 million streams over the same period.

About the Film

Written by John Logan and directed by Fuqua, Michael traces Jackson’s arc from his Jackson 5 years in the 1960s through the Bad Tour and Victory Tour of the 1980s. The ensemble cast includes Juliano Krue Valdi, Nia Long, Laura Harrier, Miles Teller, KeiLyn Durrel Jones, and Colman Domingo.

Scenes depicting the 1993 child sexual abuse allegations against Jackson were reportedly cut after a clause was found in a legal settlement, with reshoots carried out in 2025. The film has opened to negative-to-mixed critical reception globally, but its box office trajectory remains stable for now.
