With the recent OTT release of Diljit Dosanjh’s film “Satluj” (formerly titled Punjab ’95), the name Jaswant Singh Khalra has once again returned to the forefront of public discourse. The film is more than just a cinematic endeavor; it is a harrowing true story based on the courageous life of human rights activist Jaswant Singh Khalra, who dared to expose the dark, hidden atrocities buried by the establishment.
Born in 1952 in the Khalra village of Amritsar, Jaswant Singh Khalra was a humble bank employee during the 1980s. However, the turbulence following Operation Blue Star and the 1984 anti-Sikh riots, coupled with the mysterious disappearance of innocent civilians, shook him to his core. Witnessing families left in despair as their loved ones vanished after being picked up by the Punjab Police, he realized he could no longer remain silent. Risking his own life, he began a meticulous investigation to unearth the truth.
His investigative journey eventually led him to the municipal corporation records in Amritsar. What he uncovered was bone-chilling: documents detailing the names, ages, and addresses of thousands of individuals who had been allegedly killed and secretly cremated by the police without any legal process or notice to their families. These findings sent shockwaves across the nation and brought international attention to the plight of those who had been silenced.

Khalra ultimately paid the highest price for his pursuit of truth. In 1995, he himself went missing. A subsequent CBI investigation revealed that he had been held captive at a police station in Tarn Taran. This sparked a grueling legal battle that culminated on October 16, 2007, when a division bench of the Punjab and Haryana High Court sentenced four former police officials to life imprisonment for his kidnapping and murder.
As Satluj reaches audiences today, the film serves as a somber reminder of that dark era while honoring the unwavering resolve of a man who prioritized justice over his own safety. Jaswant Singh Khalra’s sacrifice remains etched in history as the voice that refused to be silenced, echoing a demand for truth that continues to resonate even decades later.
