In a recent candid conversation with interviewer Siddharth Kannan, veteran Bollywood actor Govinda opened up about his past admiration for actress Neelam Kothari, revealing the mutual pull that fueled rumors during their peak collaboration years in the 1980s and 1990s.
Govinda, who dominated the box office with a string of hits in that era, acknowledged a clear attraction to Neelam. He described how, as someone from a simpler, rural background, he was drawn to her fair complexion and distinct charm—an “opposite attraction” that often captivates. “She was different and such a good girl,” he said, adding that she appeared “like a doll” to him, leaving a lasting impression.
He recalled being an admirer of her work long before they shared the screen, often whistling in appreciation while watching her films. The opportunity to co-star with her felt surreal at the time. Their professional partnership proved highly successful, yielding multiple blockbuster films and chart-topping songs that audiences loved.
Reflecting on the nature of their bond, Govinda noted that relationships back then differed from today’s dynamics. “Affairs were not like how they are today,” he explained. “We would make a lot of noise… We would think something is happening.” He characterized their romance as the “old-school” kind—centered on glances and subtle chemistry rather than overt involvement. Despite the buzz, he emphasized the quality of their joint work, pointing out that every film they did together became a hit.

The pair featured in over a dozen projects, including notable successes such as Love 86 and Ilzaam (both 1986), Khudgarz and Sindoor (1987), and several 1989 releases like Farz Ki Jung, Billoo Badshah, Taaqatwar, and Gharana. Their on-screen chemistry consistently resonated with viewers.
This recent admission echoes Govinda’s earlier comments in a 1990 interview with Stardust magazine, where he expressed similar sentiments: “We had so many films together. We met so often, and the more I got to know her, the more I liked her. She was the kind of woman any man would have lost his heart to. I lost mine.”
Govinda has largely stepped away from films in recent years, with his last appearance in the 2019 release Rangeela Raja, which underperformed. Neelam Kothari, meanwhile, has appeared more recently on reality television, including the third season of Netflix’s Fabulous Lives of Bollywood Wives in 2024.
