Mumbai: Yash has broken his silence on the criticism surrounding Toxic: A Fairy Tale for Grown-Ups, especially the intimate visuals featuring him and Kiara Advani. The actor has rejected claims that the film is vulgar, saying there is a difference between showing intimacy on screen and deliberately making something obscene.
During his appearance on Rajat Sharma’s Aap Ki Adalat, Yash was asked about the criticism that followed the release of Toxic and its song Tabaahi. The song, which features Yash and Kiara Advani, had sparked a debate on social media, with some viewers questioning its suggestive visuals.
Responding to the criticism, Yash said, “Vulgarity is wrong. I haven’t even kissed in the film.” He explained that the way a scene is presented matters and that the intention behind it should also be taken into account. For Yash, the film’s intimate moments were created with a particular visual style rather than simply to shock the audience.
The actor also spoke about what he believes Toxic is trying to say. According to him, the film connects strongly with Gen Z and looks at how younger people question ideas and rules that earlier generations accepted without much debate. He said the story touches on generational differences, freedom and the changing way people look at relationships and society.
However, the controversy around Toxic has gone beyond its intimate scenes. Even before its release, the film faced criticism over its teaser, the portrayal of women and certain visuals that some viewers found objectionable. There was also a separate controversy over alleged tree cutting during the film’s production in Bengaluru.
Directed by Geetu Mohandas, Toxic stars Yash, Kiara Advani, Nayanthara, Huma Qureshi, Tara Sutaria and Rukmini Vasanth. The film was released on August 26 in Kannada and English, along with dubbed versions in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam.
Despite the mixed response from critics, Toxic got off to a strong start at the box office. The film reportedly earned rs 101.10 crore net in India on its opening day. By the fifth day, its India net collection had crossed rs 214 crore, while its worldwide gross was reported to be around rs 285 crore. Early estimates for Day 6 put its India net collection at approximately rs 216.29 crore.
The film has also been at the centre of a separate family related controversy. Yash’s mother, Pushpa Arunkumar, defended her son after producer Allu Aravind’s earlier remark questioning who Yash was before KGF. She pointed to his journey and humble beginnings, noting that he is the son of a bus driver.
For now, Toxic continues to attract attention both for its box office numbers and the conversations surrounding its content. Whether the controversy ultimately helps or hurts the film’s long theatrical run remains to be seen.
