Bollywood director Shakeel Noorani was detained by Mumbai Police on Monday, August 10, 2026, when a 33-year-old aspiring actress accused him of raping and intimidating her.
After going into hiding after a First Information Report (FIR) was filed against him, the 73-year-old accused was found on Saturday, August 8, 2026, at his farmhouse in Mahabaleshwar hill station, which is more than 200 kilometers away from Mumbai.
Mr. Noorani is well-known for directing movies like Suniel Shetty’s “Bade Dilwala” (1999) and Govinda’s “Joru Ka Ghulam” (2000).
The woman claimed in her lawsuit that Mr. Noorani had poisoned her and sexually abused her for the previous four years, which resulted in a miscarriage.
Under the guise of discussing the script for an upcoming movie project, she said the accused had called her to his home in Mumbai’s Malvani neighborhood, where he reportedly tainted her drink and sexually attacked her.
When she came to, Mr. Noorani allegedly showed her a private film on his phone and threatened to make it public if she went to the police or told her family.
The accused then reportedly threatened her and repeatedly sexually assaulted her using the supposed video. According to a police officer who cited the woman’s complaint from 40 days ago, he also provided her contraceptive pills after the assault and poisoned her, resulting in a miscarriage.
The accused fled once the complaint was filed. Even after searching his son’s home in Lokhandwala, in the Andheri neighborhood of Mumbai, the police were unable to find him.
Based on technical assistance, he was eventually captured from his Mahabaleshwar farmhouse, transported to Mumbai on Saturday, August 8, 2026, and placed under custody, according to the official.

The accused was brought before a local court after the arrest, and the judge ordered him to police detention until August 12, the official continued.
