Devil Wears Prada 2 First Reactions: Critics Call It Sharp, Charming and a Perfect Sequel

The first reactions to The Devil Wears Prada 2 are in, and they are overwhelmingly positive. Ahead of the film’s worldwide theatrical release on May 1, critics who have seen the sequel have praised the returning cast, the script, and the film’s sharp take on modern media with full reviews remaining under embargo until April 29.

The sequel reunites Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt, and Stanley Tucci, with director David Frankel and screenwriter Aline Brosh McKenna both returning from the original.

What Critics Are Saying

Variety’s senior artisans editor Jazz Tangcay called it a “phenomenal” follow-up and “the perfect sequel that exceeded all expectations,” praising McKenna’s script as “sharp and witty” and adding that the costumes and soundtrack both land.

Alex Weprin of The Hollywood Reporter described the film as a “biting media parody wrapped up in high fashion,” noting that “every journalist who sees it will cringe from recognition.”

Christopher Gallardo wrote that the sequel is “sharp and downright chic,” saying the cast “seamlessly slip back into their roles without missing a beat” and calling its commentary on journalism “hilarious and, perhaps, very relevant to today’s culture.”

Matt Neglia of Next Best Picture said it would be “hard to imagine anyone who’s a fan of the first film being disappointed,” describing the sequel as “funny, charming, and filled with genuinely heartwarming payoffs.” He added that the cast find “new shades in their characters that thread the fine line between nostalgia and the present day.”

The two then find themselves in a face-off against Emily Charlton, played by Blunt, who now runs her own luxury brand.

New additions to the cast include Kenneth Branagh, Lucy Liu, Justin Theroux, B.J. Novak, Simone Ashley, and Pauline Chalamet.
