Mumbai: Emraan Hashmi’s Awarapan 2 has finally slowed down at the box office. The film, which had been putting up strong numbers for nearly two weeks, saw a big drop in collections on Day 13 after Yash’s Toxic: A Fairy Tale for Grown-Ups arrived in theatres on August 26. Still, the film has done enough business to remain comfortably in the success zone, with its India net collection hovering around the rs 145 crore mark and the rs 150 crore milestone now looking possible.
As per trade estimates, Awarapan 2 earned around rs 0.9 crore net in India on Day 13. That is a steep fall compared with the previous few days. The timing is significant, as the drop came immediately after Toxic opened across theatres and took away a sizeable number of screens and shows from films already running.
Until then, Awarapan 2 had shown impressive staying power. The film had a particularly strong second weekend, collecting around rs 8 crore on Saturday and approximately rs 8.3 to 8.7 crore on Sunday, according to trade trackers. Its first week India net collection was around rs 113.5 crore, giving the film a solid base before entering its second week.
The arrival of Toxic has changed the picture, though. The Yash led film opened to a huge rs 101.10 crore net in India on its first day, immediately becoming the bigger priority for exhibitors. With fewer shows available, Awarapan 2 was bound to feel the pressure.
Even so, the film’s overall run has been impressive. Made on a reported budget of around rs 45 crore, Awarapan 2 has already recovered its investment comfortably and emerged as one of the better performing Hindi films of the year. Its worldwide gross has also crossed the rs 200 crore mark, although exact totals differ slightly between box office trackers.
The next few days will decide how close the film gets to rs 150 crore in India. Much will depend on how many shows it manages to retain as Toxic continues its theatrical run.
For now, however, there is little doubt that Awarapan 2 has already won the bigger battle. What began as a film carrying modest expectations has turned into a genuine box-office success for Emraan Hashmi.
