The newly released gangster drama Toxic, starring Yash, has drawn strong criticism for its depiction of women even as it recorded strong box-office numbers. The film collected Rs 104 crore on its opening day.
Former IPS officer and politician K Annamalai has condemned the movie, describing its treatment of women as problematic and misogynistic. He questioned the Central Board of Film Certification for granting clearance and called for stricter regulations on what scenes are permitted, including in films featuring major stars.
Annamalai expressed particular concern about the film’s commercial success and its potential influence on younger audiences. He argued that repeated exposure to such portrayals could have a serious impact on how women are viewed in society. He also noted that the content runs counter to ongoing efforts to address women’s safety and related issues, asking whether the film shows due respect to women.
At a pre-release event in Hyderabad, Yash responded to the criticism. He defended director Geetu Mohandas and stated that the film contains a strong voice for women, which may not be fully apparent from the trailer. He encouraged young women to watch the movie in theatres, saying they would find it empowering.
Toxic is a period gangster drama produced by KVN Productions and Yash’s Monster Mind Creations. It is reported to be among the most expensive Indian films made so far and was shot in both Kannada and English. Yash plays a dual role, appearing alongside Nayanthara, Tara Sutaria, Kiara Advani, Huma Qureshi and Rukmini Vasanth.
The debate surrounding the film centres on the balance between creative expression and the responsibility of mainstream cinema in shaping public attitudes.
