Timothy James Curry, the actor and singer best known for his role as Dr. Frank N. Furter in The Rocky Horror Picture Show, passed away at 80. His longtime manager Marcia Hurwitz told agency Variety that he passed away quietly on Tuesday at his Toluca Lake, Los Angeles, home. The cause of death is yet unknown. After having a severe stroke in 2012, Curry had been coping with a number of health issues.
In 1973, he performed as Dr. Frank N. Furter for the first time on stage in London. He later returned to the role in the 1975 movie. Although it didn’t have much of an impact when it was first released, the film eventually attracted a loyal audience and became a cult favorite.
Later, Curry played a variety of parts, frequently portraying quirky or evil characters. Clue, Annie, Legend, Home Alone 2: Lost in New York, The Three Musketeers, and Charlie’s Angels were among his film credits.
The actor was a well-known theater performer as well. Throughout his career, he was nominated for three Tony Awards: Amadeus, My Favorite Year, and Monty Python’s Spamalot.
Curry also contributed his unique voice to a number of animated productions. In 1991, he received a Daytime Emmy for his voice acting in Peter Pan and the Pirates.
After having a stroke in 2012, his work stagnated, although he kept taking on some tasks. In 2024, he made a comeback to the film industry with the horror flick Stream. Curry experimented with music as well, putting out records and playing with his own band.
Nevertheless, it was his courageous portrayal of Dr. Frank N. Furter that elevated him to the status of a timeless pop culture hero and exposed his work to a new generation of admirers.
