Tata Sons N Chandrasekaran Tells Air India Employees Challenging Time Record Losses CEO Exit

New Delhi: Tata Sons chairman Natarajan Chandrasekaran addressed Air India employees on Friday, acknowledging that the airline is going through a difficult period marked by record losses and operational challenges.

“Air Indians have shown great tenacity in dealing with a perfect storm, and we must continue with the same spirit that has been demonstrated,” Chandrasekaran said during the meeting at the Air India Group headquarters in Gurugram. He added that while the future remains bright and a strong foundation has been laid, the current challenges are particularly visible across the airline industry.

The address came at a critical juncture for the carrier, which is set to post its widest-ever annual loss. It also coincides with the impending departure of Chief Executive Officer Campbell Wilson. The airline’s turnaround efforts have been slowed by integration costs following the merger with Vistara and ongoing reliability issues, despite significant fleet expansion.

Chandrasekaran stressed the need to stay focused on execution. “What matters now is staying focused on execution. Our focus should be on what is within our control, where we can improve, be precise on costs and remain grounded in the reality of the situation,” he told the workforce.

External factors such as a fatal crash, rising fuel prices, and extended flight routes due to avoidance of Pakistani airspace and Middle East conflicts have increased costs and affected performance on key international routes.

“The Tata Group remains committed to the Air India group,” the chairman assured employees. “The board is fully supportive and will continue to work closely with the management team.”
