Junagadh: After Ahmedabad’s recent crackdown on illegal constructions at Chandola Lake, Junagadh has initiated a similar large-scale demolition operation today. The Junagadh Municipal Corporation, in coordination with district authorities and police forces, began removing unauthorized structures near the historic Dharagadh Gate near Uparkot Fort early this morning.
Under tight security, around 59 illegal houses have already been demolished, freeing up approximately 16,000 square meters of government land. Officials estimate the market value of the cleared land to be around Rs 50 crore. The operation, which involves 10 JCB machines and 10 tractors, aims to eventually demolish over 100 unauthorized structures.
To maintain order and prevent any untoward incidents, over 400 personnel have been deployed, including 3 DySPs, 9 PIs, 26 PSIs, and 260 police officers. The site is being closely monitored using drones, binoculars, and wireless communication systems. Officials from PGVCL, the health department, and the water supply division are also present on-site.
Deputy Collector Charansingh Gohil stated that illegal encroachments had been present in the area for many years. Authorities had issued official notices well in advance and provided occupants with time to present their claims.

Despite the preparations, the demolition triggered emotional reactions from affected residents. Many families, devastated by the loss of their homes, expressed their grief and frustration. One local resident, who claimed to have lived in the area for over 20 years, questioned the classification of their home as illegal, stating they had regularly paid electricity and water bills. “Now that our home is gone, where are we supposed to go?” they asked tearfully.
