Thai Woman Marries Kanpur Man, Lends Rs 60 Lakh, Then Learns of His Existing Marriage

A Thai woman has alleged that a man from Kanpur married her after claiming to be unmarried, took nearly Rs 60 lakh from her, and later revealed he already had a family.

Upsorn, who runs a restaurant and canteen in Thailand, first connected with Irfan, a leather businessman from Kanpur, through social media. Their online conversations developed into a romantic relationship. According to her, Irfan told her he was unmarried and travelled to Thailand to meet her. Two years ago, the couple married in Thailand.

After the marriage, Irfan began requesting money, citing business needs and other financial requirements. Upsorn claims she transferred nearly Rs 60 lakh over time, using earnings from her businesses and funds borrowed from relatives. Once the money was received, she alleges, Irfan stopped all contact and returned to India.

After months without communication, Upsorn travelled to India and arrived at Irfan’s home in Kanpur on October 6. There she discovered that the man who had presented himself as unmarried had been married for 12 years and had three children.

When she confronted him and demanded the return of her money, Upsorn alleged that he assaulted her. She further claimed he told her that if she wished to stay with him or recover the amount, she would have to convert to Islam and wear a burqa.
