Janmashtami 2026: Everyone Remembers Krishna, But What Happened To The Baby Girl Who Fooled Kamsa?

Every Janmashtami, the story of Lord Krishna’s birth is told and retold. There is the midnight birth in Mathura, Vasudeva’s journey through the night and the infant Krishna being taken to Gokul to save him from the cruel King Kamsa.

But there was another baby born that night whose story is rarely discussed Yogamaya.

Her role in the story may have been brief, but she played a crucial part in ensuring Krishna’s safety and delivering a warning that left Kamsa stunned.

According to the Srimad Bhagavatam, Yogamaya appeared as a baby girl around the same time Krishna was born. Krishna was born to Devaki and Vasudeva in Mathura, while a girl was born to Yashoda in Gokul. Vasudeva carried Krishna to Gokul and returned to Mathura with the newborn girl.

Kamsa had been waiting anxiously for Devaki’s eighth child. A prophecy had warned him that Devaki’s eighth child would eventually cause his death. Driven by fear, he had already killed her previous children.

When Kamsa heard that the child had been born, he rushed to the prison. Devaki desperately pleaded with her brother to spare the baby, pointing out that the child was a girl and could not possibly threaten him.

Kamsa did not listen.

He grabbed the newborn by the legs and tried to smash her against a stone. But before he could do it, the child slipped from his hands and rose into the sky.

In an instant, she appeared in a divine form with eight arms, carrying weapons. She was revealed as the goddess Durga, described in the Bhagavatam as the younger sister of Vishnu.

Her message to Kamsa was chilling the person he feared had already been born somewhere else.

The revelation left Kamsa shocked. For a brief time, he regretted his actions and released Devaki and Vasudeva, even asking for their forgiveness. But his change of heart did not last. He soon returned to his old ways and continued his attempts to find and kill Krishna.

Yogamaya’s story is therefore much more than a forgotten side note to Krishna’s birth. In the traditional account, she is a divine power who helps set the events of Krishna’s earthly life in motion.

While Janmashtami celebrates the arrival of Krishna, the story of Yogamaya offers another fascinating part of that night a baby girl who escaped Kamsa’s hands, revealed her divine identity and told the tyrant that his fate was already on its way.

Krishna became the hero of the story. But Yogamaya was the mysterious figure who delivered the warning Kamsa could never escape.
