Dubai: The 2027 ODI World Cup is scheduled to begin in October, but knowing the possible date on which the tournament could start may surprise many. And along with the surprise, it could also make them feel proud.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) is reportedly planning to start the 2027 World Cup on October 2, the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. According to a report, the ICC wants to schedule the opening match on that day with the intention of sending a special message to the world.

The 2027 ODI World Cup will be jointly hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia. South Africa, in particular, has a deep connection with Mahatma Gandhi. Gandhiji lived in South Africa for 21 years before launching his freedom movement in India, and it was there that he resolved to fight for India’s independence.

A major event is returning to South Africa after two decades, and everyone knows how popular Bapu remains in the country. Nelson Mandela followed Gandhiji’s path and helped free South Africa from white-minority rule. By starting the World Cup in this cricket-loving country on Gandhi Jayanti, the ICC reportedly wants to remind the world once again of Bapu’s message of unity and non-violence.

The ICC has not made any official announcement yet. However, it is believed that the governing body was earlier considering starting the World Cup on October 8 after the warm-up matches. It is now reportedly considering holding those warm-up games in late September and beginning the World Cup on October 2.

The final of the 14-team World Cup is expected to be played on November 21.
