After failing to fully recover from a left knee injury he sustained during the second ODI against England last month, Jasprit Bumrah will not play in India’s next two-Test series against Sri Lanka.
The 32-year-old was included to Sri Lanka’s team after passing a fitness evaluation at the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru. He was rested for the one-off Test match against Afghanistan in June. However, it is believed that Bumrah, who was sidelined for the Lord’s ODI due to an impact injury he had while fielding in Cardiff, continued to feel uncomfortable during his recuperation and has now been removed from the team.
For India’s evolving Test team, which has lost two home Test series in the last two years and had inconsistent success outside of it, the setback is a severe blow. Since sustaining a back injury during the 2024–25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia, Bumrah, the top-ranked Test bowler in the world, has had his workload carefully monitored.
He only played in three of the five Test matches in England last year as part of that workload management, and he was rested for the Afghanistan Test right after IPL 2026.
As of yet, no replacement has been named.
