Jurassic Park Actor Sam Neill Passes Away At 78

Actor Sam Neill, best known for his lead role in Jurassic Park, has received tributes from around the world after passing away at the age of 78. His family made the announcement, stating that his death was “sudden and unexpected” in Sydney, Australia.

In addition to appearing in movies including The Piano, The Hunt for Red October, Dead Calm, and Event Horizon, as well as the BBC television series Peaky Blinders, Neill portrayed Dr. Alan Grant in Jurassic Park.

He was called “one of the greats” by New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon, while Australian actress Toni Collette wrote: “I love you, dear Sam.” You are a hero. You are a legend. You, my dear. Our wonderful companion. You are already sorely missed.

Born in Northern Ireland and raised in New Zealand, Neill passed away “surrounded by family and passed with the dignity that has characterised his whole life,” according to a statement. He disclosed in March 2023 that he had been receiving chemotherapy following a blood cancer diagnosis of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

He then stated that although the illness was in remission, he would need chemotherapy every month for the remainder of his life. Neill said that a scan in April 2026 revealed no cancer in his body, and his family declared in a statement on Monday that he “remained cancer free” at the time of his passing.

In tribute to Luxon, Luxon said: “For more than fifty years he took New Zealand stories to the world and his talents helped make our film industry into what it is today, one of our greatest cultural exports.”Neill was described as “such a thoughtful, curious, and decent person” by former New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern.”We’ve lost another incredible kiwi, and I feel profoundly sad,” she said.

In addition, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese wrote on X that he “starred in so many beloved Australian stories and he earned a special place in Australian hearts” in remembrance.

Nigel John Dermot Neill was born in Omagh, Northern Ireland, in 1947. As a child, he and his family relocated to Christchurch, New Zealand.

At the age of twelve, he took on the name Sam because his school had multiple Nigels.

He started acting while attending the University of Canterbury, and The City of No (1971) was his first motion picture. Following several parts in New Zealand television and movies, he became more well-known in the 1977 movie Sleeping Dogs, which was one of the nation’s first to be distributed internationally.

After that, he relocated to Australia, where he acted in the 1979 movie My Brilliant Career, which helped launch his career as a top actor.

In 1993, Neill became well-known throughout the world for his roles as palaeontologist Dr. Grant in Steven Spielberg’s Jurassic Park and in Jane Campion’s Oscar-winning film The Piano.

In addition to voicing the character in three video games based on the series, he returned to the role in Jurassic Park III (2001) and Jurassic World Dominion (2022).

In the first two seasons of the BBC’s Peaky Blinders, Neill played the cruel and dishonest police officer Major Chester Campbell, which helped him achieve prominence on television.

He accumulated more than 150 cinematic credits during the course of a career spanning more than 50 years.

His final motion picture role was in The Fox (2025), and his final television role was in the Netflix series Untamed (2025). In 2027, he is anticipated to appear posthumously in Godzilla x Kong: Supernova and The Last Resort.

In 1991, Neill was named an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for his acting services. Later, in 2007, he was named a Distinguished Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit. In 2022, he became a knight after New Zealand’s honours system was modified to allow recipients to acquire titular honours.

He disclosed information about his cancer diagnosis and treatment in his 2023 autobiography, Did I Ever Tell You This?
