Chinese PLA Occupying Ancestral Land In Arunachal, Claims Tribal Organization

Itanagar : The Nah tribal community in Arunachal Pradesh has raised serious concerns over alleged Chinese incursions along the India-China border in Upper Subansiri district, claiming that the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) has gradually taken control of large portions of their traditional grazing, hunting and agricultural land over the past six years.

In a memorandum submitted to the Upper Subansiri Deputy Commissioner, Nah Welfare Society (NWS) president Keru Chader stated that areas once freely used by the community for hunting, collecting forest produce and grazing livestock are now allegedly under the control of the Chinese PLA.

The NWS claimed that Chinese forces have expanded their presence across five locations within the Taksing revenue circle, accusing Beijing of systematically extending its control along the international border by occupying strategically important areas.

Nacho MLA Nakap Nalo urged caution, saying the allegations require official verification as they involve national security. “The claims need to be confirmed by the administration,” he said, adding that the issue is a matter of serious concern.

According to the tribal organisation, Chinese activity along the Taksing border has intensified over the past 10 to 15 years with the apparent objective of occupying more territory. The NWS alleged that several areas traditionally controlled by the community until 2020 have since come under the PLA’s occupation.

Among the locations cited were Oying in the Asaphila area, Paniar (Chujarta area), Marpan (Marnafe), Potrang Lake and Tindingtang (TG). The organisation said these sites are located close to the Taksing headquarters, with some also holding religious significance as pilgrimage destinations.

The memorandum further alleged that the Chinese military has constructed roads and military camps inside Indian territory. While expressing unwavering faith in the Indian Army, Chader said the pace and scale of the PLA’s activities in the Taksing region were alarming. He claimed that despite the Army’s continued efforts to safeguard the border, the community fears it is gradually losing its ancestral land.

So far, neither the Arunachal Pradesh government nor the Upper Subansiri district administration has issued an official response to the allegations. Senior district officials, including Deputy Commissioner Gambo Tasso, were unavailable for comment.
