Surat : A 22 year old woman and her three year old daughter were killed after a speeding dumper allegedly rammed into the motorcycle they were travelling on in Surat’s Bhestan area on Sunday, triggering grief among family members and fresh concerns over reckless driving by heavy vehicles in the city.
The victims, identified as Rukshana Imran Sayyed and her daughter Zainab, died on the spot after they were thrown onto the road and crushed under the dumper’s wheels on Bhestan bridge. Rukshana’s brother, who was riding the motorcycle, and her four year old daughter, Haika, survived the collision with injuries.
According to police, Rukshana had visited her parental home with her daughters to observe Muharram and was returning to her in-laws’ residence when the accident occurred. The dumper allegedly hit the motorcycle from behind, causing the family to lose balance before the victims came under the vehicle.
Police personnel from Bhestan police station reached the spot soon after the incident, detained the dumper driver and registered a case. An investigation is underway to determine the exact cause of the crash and whether the driver was speeding or driving under the influence of alcohol. While some local residents alleged that the driver appeared intoxicated, officials have not yet confirmed those claims.
The tragedy left the victims’ family devastated. Outside Surat Civil Hospital, grieving relatives broke down as the bodies were brought for post mortem examination. Rukshana’s husband, a cloth trader, described the loss as another heartbreaking blow to the family, recalling that they had also lost another close relative in a road accident last year.
The incident also sparked anger among local residents, who demanded strict punishment for the accused driver and stronger enforcement against reckless movement of heavy vehicles through city roads. Residents called for intensified action against overspeeding and alleged drunken driving to prevent similar tragedies.
Road safety continues to remain a major concern in Surat, with repeated accidents involving heavy vehicles highlighting the need for stricter traffic enforcement, better monitoring and improved protection for vulnerable road users, particularly two wheeler riders. Authorities are expected to continue the investigation while examining whether additional legal action will be taken against the driver.
