An official stated on Thursday that police have opened an investigation following the discovery of about 20 dead and disfigured cats in the Chembur neighborhood in eastern Mumbai.
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) India, an animal rights organization, has announced a reward of up to Rs 50,000 for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for the cats’ death in response to the unsettling finding.
Rubeena Pathan, a local animal caretaker, reported to the authorities that she had discovered the disfigured carcasses of cats in the Panjrapole neighborhood over time. Following that, Pathan and members from PETA India filed a case with the police.
According to the official, she saw the carcasses of six cats last week.
A case under section 325 (mischief by killing or maiming an animal) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and pertinent sections of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals has been filed at the RCF police station against unidentified individuals.
“We are actively scanning CCTV footage from the surrounding Panjrapole area to identify the culprit or culprits behind these acts of cruelty,” a police station spokesman stated.
According to PETA India, informants who have useful information on the crime can get in touch with them while keeping their identities completely private.
