New Delhi: Artificial intelligence research organization OpenAI has officially chosen Prabhjeet Singh, the former president of Uber India and South Asia, to serve as its Managing Director for India. The high-profile hiring decision underscores the tech firm’s intent to aggressively scale its commercial footprint and operations within one of its primary global markets.
As reported by the Hindustan Times, Singh is slated to formally step into his new corporate responsibility in September. In this capacity, he will answer directly to Kiran Mani, OpenAI’s Managing Director for the Asia-Pacific region.
Driving Enterprise Growth and Regulatory Engagement
According to statements provided by an official company spokesperson to the Hindustan Times, Singh will assume the mantle of OpenAI’s highest-ranking executive stationed permanently in India. His multi-pronged operational mandate covers a wide swath of the organization’s regional performance metrics.
Specifically, Singh will take charge of driving consumer-facing growth, boosting enterprise software adoption, managing complex local regulatory frameworks, and establishing long-term commercial operations. The corporate spokesperson further detailed that a core component of his leadership will revolve around cultivating strategic alliances, uplifting the local AI developer environment, and ensuring that individual consumers, corporate houses, educational institutions, and government bodies can seamlessly leverage artificial intelligence tools.
Transitioning From Mobility to Artificial Intelligence
Singh brings a seasoned track record of navigating complex emerging consumer spaces in South Asia. An alumnus of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur and the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Ahmedabad, he originally built an extensive consulting pedigree with McKinsey & Company before venturing into the tech ecosystem.
Prior to accepting the leadership offer at OpenAI, Singh spent roughly ten years scaling ride-hailing giant Uber across the subcontinent. During his tenure as president of Uber India and South Asia, he successfully managed mobility operations across a massive geographical portfolio that stretched across India, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh.

The executive appointment signals OpenAI’s continued infrastructural and financial investment into the country, which corporate leaders have repeatedly categorized as a top-priority market.
