Ronaldo Fails to Register a Shot on Target as Portugal Held by DR Congo; Historic Point for African Side

Houston: Portugal were held to a surprising 1-1 draw by African minnows DR Congo in a FIFA World Cup match played in Houston, Texas, late Wednesday night (Indian time). The result handed DR Congo a historic World Cup point against one of Europe’s strongest football nations.
Congo Defenders Keep Ronaldo Quiet
The draw was a major disappointment for Portugal, but an even bigger talking point was the performance of superstar Cristiano Ronaldo. The veteran forward failed to score and, remarkably, did not register a single shot on target during the entire 90-minute contest.
DR Congo’s defenders successfully neutralized Ronaldo throughout the match, building a solid defensive wall that prevented the Portuguese captain from making any meaningful impact in one of the most important matches of the latter stage of his career.
Historic Celebration in Congo
While Portuguese fans were left frustrated by the result, celebrations broke out across DR Congo after the African nation secured a memorable point on football’s biggest stage. For Congo, the draw felt almost as significant as a victory.
Ronaldo’s Goal Drought Continues
Ronaldo, who has scored 143 international goals for Portugal, has now experienced six World Cup matches in which he failed to record a single shot on target.

Messi Shines While Ronaldo Struggles
The contrast with Lionel Messi could hardly have been greater. Earlier on Wednesday, Messi inspired Argentina to a 3-0 victory over Algeria with a historic hat-trick and several record-breaking achievements. Ronaldo, one of the few players consistently compared with Messi throughout their careers, endured a frustrating night and left the field without a goal.
Wissa’s Memorable Equaliser

Portugal took an early lead when Joao Neves scored in the sixth minute. However, DR Congo struck back just before halftime as Yoane Wissa converted from a corner-kick situation to level the score at 1-1.
Despite enjoying nearly 75 percent possession throughout the match, Portugal were unable to find a second goal and had to settle for a draw.
Ronaldo Still Searching for a Goal
Ronaldo has now gone scoreless in five consecutive World Cup matches and in ten straight appearances across major international tournaments.
World Record Opportunity Remains
Like Messi, Ronaldo is appearing in his sixth World Cup, making him one of only two players in history to reach that milestone. Although he failed to score against DR Congo, he will have another chance in Portugal’s next group-stage match.
If Ronaldo scores in the next game, he will become the first footballer ever to score in all six World Cup tournaments in which he has participated.
Dependence on Penalties Raises Questions
Another surprising statistic is that Ronaldo has not scored a non-penalty goal in a major international tournament over the past five years. Every goal he has managed in those competitions has come from the penalty spot, highlighting the challenges he has faced in open play during the latter stages of his illustrious career.
