California: Co-hosts USA collected three valuable points with a dominant 4-1 victory over Paraguay in their opening match of the FIFA World Cup at Los Angeles Stadium on Saturday morning (IST).
Forward Folarin Balogun was the star of the match, scoring two goals to lead the American charge.
Own Goal Sets the Tone
The scoring began in the seventh minute through an own goal. Paraguay defender Bobadilla accidentally put the ball into his own net inside the penalty area, handing the USA an early 1-0 lead.

Balogun Scores Twice
Balogun doubled the advantage in the 31st minute and then struck again shortly before the end of the first half, giving the hosts a commanding 3-0 lead at the break.
The USA defense remained solid for most of the second half, but Paraguay pulled one back in the 73rd minute through Mauricio, reducing the deficit to 3-1.
However, in the eighth minute of stoppage time after the 90-minute mark, Gio Reyna found the net to seal a convincing 4-1 victory for the Americans.

Historic Opening Performance
The win marked a record-breaking start for the USA. It was the first time the Americans had scored four goals in a FIFA World Cup match, and the 4-1 triumph became their biggest-ever winning margin in the tournament. Their 3-0 halftime lead was also a World Cup record for the team.
