Lucknow Crushed Under Punjab’s Record 254-Run Total

New Chandigarh: Punjab Kings (254/7 in 20 overs) defeated Lucknow Super Giants (200/5 in 20 overs) by 54 runs on Sunday to further strengthen their position at the top of the table with 11 points. The team led by Shreyas Iyer remains the only unbeaten side in the tournament. Meanwhile, Lucknow slipped to eighth place after suffering their third consecutive defeat. Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Rajasthan Royals occupy second and third positions respectively with eight points each.

Connolly Gets Two Lifelines

Punjab opener and Player of the Match Priyansh Arya (93 off 37 balls, 9 sixes, 4 fours) and Australian batter Cooper Connolly (87 off 46 balls, 7 sixes, 8 fours) were the two standout performers behind Punjab’s record-breaking innings.

The duo put together a massive 182-run partnership for the second wicket in just 80 balls. Connolly received two crucial reprieves early in his innings when he was on just four runs—mistakes that proved costly for Lucknow. He was trapped LBW by Mohsin Khan, but Lucknow opted not to review the decision. Soon after, Mohsin himself dropped a return catch off his own bowling.

255-Run Target Proves Too Steep

Chasing a daunting target of 255, the team led by Rishabh Pant crumbled under pressure. After losing the first wicket at 61 and the second at 109, Lucknow lost wickets in quick succession within a span of a few overs.

Mukul Chaudhary remained unbeaten on 21 (17 balls). For Punjab, Marco Jansen claimed two wickets, while Arshdeep Singh, Vijaykumar Vyshak and Yuzvendra Chahal picked up one wicket each.

Markram Moved to Middle Order

Pant himself could only manage 43 before being dismissed off Arshdeep Singh, caught by wicketkeeper Prabhsimran Singh. Opener Mitchell Marsh contributed 40, while Ayush Badoni added 35.

In short, none of Lucknow’s batters managed to play a long innings. Aiden Markram (42 off 22 balls, 3 sixes, 3 fours) was sent to bat in the middle order instead of opening and delivered a relatively impactful performance.

21 Sixes Power Punjab’s Record Innings.

Earlier, table-toppers Punjab made the most of being asked to bat first and delivered a dominant performance, posting the highest team total of the season—254/7 in 20 overs. In the process, they surpassed Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s previous record of 250/3 against Chennai Super Kings.

The 182-run stand between Arya (93) and Connolly (87) for the second wicket proved to be match-winning. Later, Marcus Stoinis (29) and Shashank Singh (17) added a quickfire 44 runs in just 17 balls.

A total of 21 sixes were smashed in the innings, underlining Punjab’s batting dominance.
