A Rajkot-based doctor has been arrested for secretly installing a spy camera inside a clinic and using the footage to blackmail a fellow doctor, police said. The accused, Dr Kamal Nandha, allegedly carried out the surveillance out of one-sided romantic interest in a female colleague. More than 3,000 videos were recovered during the investigation.
The complaint, filed at Rajkot Cyber Crime Police Station, states that Nandha hid a camera inside a bulb holder in the delivery room of a clinic on Sadhu Vaswani Road. The device activated whenever the light was switched on and stored footage on a memory card. Police say he would periodically swap out the card to collect recordings a practice believed to have been running since 2023.
The recordings captured private moments of both the complainant doctor and a female colleague. Nandha allegedly shared clips with a group of local intermediaries and people posing as journalists, who then used the footage to threaten the victim with public exposure unless Rs 25 lakh was paid. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) Jagdish Bangarva said the accused holds a BHMS degree and had legitimate access to the clinic, which allowed him to plant the device without raising suspicion.
“The camera was concealed in a bulb holder and recorded footage onto a memory card,” Bangarva said, adding that Nandha exploited his access to retrieve data undetected. Police say the blackmail escalated into repeated threats and harassment through 2024. Though the demand was Rs 25 lakh, investigators found that Rs 50,000 had actually been extracted from the victim so far.
Twelve people have been named in the case. Charges include extortion, criminal conspiracy, intimidation, and violations under the Information Technology Act.
According to the complaint, Nandha’s motive traced back to his one-sided interest in a female doctor who was in a relationship with the complainant. Unable to accept this, he allegedly used the recordings as leverage against both of them.
Police have also initiated action against others involved in distributing or exploiting the footage. Efforts are underway to trace all accused and collect further digital evidence linked to the videos. Investigators say more arrests are likely as the probe continues. Officials have called on medical establishments to tighten internal security to guard against similar breaches.
