Instagram Down: Thousands Report Issues With Messages

A widespread disruption on Instagram left thousands of users unable to send messages on the platform, triggering complaints across social media and outage-tracking websites. The issue affected the Meta-owned photo-sharing app on Tuesday, with users reporting difficulties accessing certain features, particularly direct messaging.

According to outage-monitoring website Downdetector, more than 3,800 reports of problems had been logged at the time the issue was being tracked. Many users indicated that Instagram’s messaging feature was not functioning properly, preventing them from contacting others through the platform’s direct messages.

Several users also reported encountering glitches while attempting to use the application, suggesting that the problem was not limited to a single region. As complaints grew, many people took to other social media platforms to check whether the outage was affecting others as well. Similar situations often occur during service disruptions, with users turning to alternative platforms to confirm whether the issue is widespread.

Downdetector, which compiles outage reports from users around the world, provides a real-time snapshot of service interruptions based on submitted complaints. While the figures indicate how many users are reporting problems, the actual number of affected individuals could be higher because not every user files a report.
