Azerbaijan Warns of Retaliation After Alleged Iranian Drone Strike On Airport

New Delhi: Regional tensions intensified after Azerbaijan accused Iran of carrying out a drone strike on its territory, damaging infrastructure and injuring civilians. According to a report by WION News, the alleged attack targeted the airport in Azerbaijan’s Nakhchivan exclave, raising fears of a broader escalation in the ongoing regional conflict.

Authorities in Azerbaijan stated that two drones believed to have originated from Iran crossed the border and struck locations within the Nakhchivan region. One drone reportedly hit the terminal area of Nakhchivan International Airport, while another crashed near a school in a nearby village. The incident resulted in injuries to two civilians and caused visible damage to infrastructure.

Following the incident, Azerbaijan’s Foreign Ministry strongly condemned the strike, describing it as a violation of international law and a threat to regional stability. The ministry summoned Iran’s ambassador in Baku to formally protest the attack and demanded an explanation from Tehran regarding the drones’ origin and the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Government officials also indicated that Azerbaijan reserves the right to take appropriate measures in response to the alleged attack. According to statements referenced in reports cited by *WION News*, the country is considering its options and warned that actions targeting its sovereignty would not go unanswered.

The strike occurred amid rising tensions in the Middle East, where ongoing hostilities involving Iran have increasingly affected neighbouring regions. Analysts have noted that the incident could further complicate the already fragile security situation across the region.

While Azerbaijan has blamed Iran for the drone strike, Tehran has not officially acknowledged carrying out the attack. However, the development has drawn international attention as concerns grow that the conflict could widen beyond its current fronts.

According to the sources, the situation remains fluid as Azerbaijani authorities continue assessing the damage and investigating the drone debris while monitoring security conditions along the border.
