Shiv Sena Pushes for Investigation into Kunal Kamra’s Alleged Foreign Funding

The Eknath Shinde-led faction of Shiv Sena has called for a formal investigation into the financial dealings of comedian Kunal Kamra, filing a complaint with the Mumbai Police’s Economic Offences Wing (EOW) on Wednesday. The party alleges that Kamra is receiving foreign funds and unaccounted money, which they claim are being used to fuel a targeted campaign against Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde.

According to Shiv Sena leader Rahool Kanal, the complaint demands a thorough probe under the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA) to scrutinize the sources of Kamra’s income. Kanal emphasized that the party has formally requested the EOW to examine whether these funds are linked to efforts to tarnish Shinde’s reputation. “We’ve asked for a detailed investigation into his funding,” Kanal told, underscoring the seriousness of the allegations.

This development follows a series of legal actions against Kamra, who has been summoned three times by Mumbai Police in connection to a separate case. The comedian is accused of making defamatory remarks about Shinde during a performance at the Habitat Comedy Club in Khar, where he reportedly labeled the Chief Minister a “traitor” in a satirical song. The initial complaint, lodged by Shiv Sena MLA Murji Patel at Khar police station last month, has since escalated, with the police issuing a third summons on Tuesday, requiring Kamra to appear on April 5.

The controversy intensified after Shiv Sena activists vandalized the Habitat Comedy Club studio in response to Kamra’s remarks, prompting further legal and public backlash. Despite the mounting pressure, Kamra has yet to comply with the summons, adding fuel to the ongoing dispute between the comedian and the ruling party.

The Shiv Sena’s latest move reflects their determination to hold Kamra accountable, both legally and financially, as tensions continue to rise over his provocative commentary. The EOW has not yet commented on whether it will proceed with the investigation into the funding allegations.
