BJP Gears Up to Name New National President on January 20

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is poised to reveal its new national president on January 20, with nominations for the position scheduled to be submitted the previous day, on January 19, according to reports from the PTI news agency.

This development follows the party’s recent issuance of a formal notification outlining the election schedule. The process includes filing of nominations on January 19, followed by scrutiny of the papers that same day. If required, polling will occur on January 20, though sources indicate the outcome is likely to be decided without a contest, leading to a direct announcement on that date. BJP chief election officer K Lakshman will oversee the proceedings and declare the result.

Party insiders point to national working president Nitin Nabin as the frontrunner for the role, with expectations that he will be elected unopposed. Nabin, a five-time MLA from Bihar representing the Bankipur constituency, was elevated to the working president position on December 14 last year. This appointment was widely interpreted as part of a deliberate generational transition within the organization.

The 45-year-old leader, son of late BJP veteran Nabin Kishore Prasad Sinha, is recognized for his strong ideological grounding and deep ties to the party structure. He maintains close links with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and has previously served twice as a minister in the Bihar government.

Nitin Nabin’s anticipated ascension mirrors the path followed by outgoing president JP Nadda. Nadda was initially named national working president in June 2019 before securing the full presidency unopposed on January 20, 2020, succeeding Amit Shah.

Nominations for Nabin are expected to come in multiple sets to demonstrate broad support. One set will feature endorsements from over 20 elected state BJP presidents. Another will carry signatures from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Home Minister Amit Shah, and JP Nadda. A third will include backing from members of the BJP National Council, as reported by ANI news agency.

The transition comes as the BJP prepares for upcoming electoral challenges, including assembly polls in several states. Nadda’s tenure, which began in 2020 and was extended due to the 2024 general elections, is now set to conclude with this leadership change.
