According to the Chief Minister’s Secretariat, Union Home Minister Amit Shah would visit Manipur during the first week of October to inspect several development projects and lay the foundation stone for a medical college.
According to the Chief Minister’s Secretariat, Shah and Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh discussed the planned visit at their meeting in Delhi on Wednesday. The Home Minister also stated that the central government will grant the state’s citizens’ demands.
With a heightened effort to update the National Register of Citizens (NRC) prior to the Census, the planned visit coincides with a politically delicate time. In the Senapati district, which is primarily home to the Naga community, the state government recently decided to establish a medical college.
The Senapati Medical College project has the potential to improve the hill district’s healthcare system, provide access to medical education, and generate jobs.
Shah’s first trip to Manipur since speaking at an election rally in Imphal on April 15, 2024, makes the October visit noteworthy as well. He had previously traveled to the state for four days, from May 29 to June 1, 2023, just after the unrest broke out.
Shah visited representatives from many communities, political parties, civil society organizations, and other stakeholders during that tour.
Since May 2023, ethnic violence in Manipur’s hill areas has killed at least 260 people and left others homeless.
On February 13, 2025, the state came under President’s Rule due to ongoing ethnic conflicts and Chief Minister N Biren Singh’s resignation. On February 4, almost a year later, it was lifted, and Y Khemchand Singh was appointed Chief Minister.
