Mumbai Braces for Winter Bite as Chilly Winds Usher in Single-Digit Lows Across State

Mumbai residents are awakening to a sharper winter chill this week, as cooler air sweeps through the city and much of Maharashtra. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts predominantly dry conditions with clear skies persisting until next Tuesday, bringing minimum temperatures down to as low as 15 degrees Celsius in key areas.

In Mumbai, the mercury is set to hover between 15 and 18 degrees Celsius at the Santacruz observatory, while Colaba could see readings from 18 to 21 degrees Celsius. This downturn follows a noticeable dip observed earlier in the week: Sunday’s low of 20.3 degrees Celsius fell to 18.4 degrees on Monday, and Wednesday brought 16.7 degrees at Santacruz—a 2.1-degree shortfall from seasonal norms—and 20.7 degrees at Colaba, 1 degree below average. Winds have picked up modestly, clocking speeds of 11 to 18 kmph.

The cold snap extends beyond the metropolis. IMD has issued warnings for cold wave conditions in Pune and its surrounding ghats today, as well as in Nashik on Thursday and Friday. Nashik already logged a brisk 8.1 degrees Celsius on Wednesday, underscoring the intensity gripping the state’s northern districts. Neighboring regions like Thane and Navi Mumbai are bracing for lows around 17 to 18 degrees over the coming days, with daytime highs climbing no higher than 33 degrees amid sunny skies.

Looking ahead, Mumbai’s forecast points to the coldest mornings yet this season. Santacruz is projected to hit 15 degrees today and Friday, easing slightly to 16 degrees on Saturday before warming to 18 degrees by Sunday and Monday. Such conditions, while a welcome respite from the summer swelter, have prompted fisherfolk in areas like Mahim West to navigate smog-shrouded horizons, as captured in recent cityscapes from Bandra and Shivaji Park, where mist cannons continue efforts to curb dust pollution.

As the nip in the air intensifies, residents are advised to layer up for early mornings and evenings, with the IMD emphasizing vigilance in colder pockets like Nashik and Pune to guard against the health risks of sudden temperature drops.
