Election Commission Extends SIR Form Deadline To December 11 Across 12 States And UTs

The Election Commission on Sunday announced an extension of the deadline for submitting enumeration forms under the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process. Electors in nine states and three Union Territories now have until December 11, rather than the previous deadline of December 4, to complete and return their forms.

With this extension, voters in Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Chhattisgarh, Goa, Gujarat, Kerala, Lakshadweep, Madhya Pradesh, Puducherry, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, and West Bengal have an additional week to submit their documents to Booth Level Officers, who will upload the information to the ECINet system. The draft electoral roll will now be released on December 16 delayed by a week from the original date of December 9. All forms submitted by the new deadline will be reflected in this draft. The publication of the final roll is rescheduled to February 14, 2026, instead of February 7.

In a communication sent to Chief Electoral Officers of the affected states and UTs, the Commission confirmed that this revised timeline replaces the original schedule issued on October 27. No official reason was provided for the change. According to a statement from Saturday, the Commission reported that 99.53% of forms had been distributed among the estimated 510 million electors, with 78.97% already digitised.

The SIR was first initiated on June 24, beginning with Bihar ahead of the state’s assembly polls. This review resulted in a 6% reduction in registered voters in Bihar, attributed to the removal of deceased, relocated, or missing electors. The timeline for the current phase covering the 12 states and UTs was unveiled by the Commission on October 27, with other regions set to undergo the process at a later date.

Unlike the previous two-decade practice of annual and pre-election Special Summary Revisions, which involved limited updates, the SIR represents a comprehensive overhaul. The new process prepares voter rolls from scratch, using the last intensive revision reference typically from the early 2000s specific to each state.
