GST Benefits To Consumers : Mother Dairy Slashes Product Prices; Milk Cheaper By Rs 2, Ghee By Rs 30

Mumbai : In good news for consumers, Mother Dairy said it is slashing prices across its range of dairy and food products after the government’s big GST 2.0 revamp. The cut comes on the back of GST reforms which lowered or scrapped taxes on many essentials.

Prices of everyday favourites like paneer, butter, cheese, ghee, milkshakes, and ice creams are also dropping. For example, a 500-gram pack of butter will now cost Rs 285 instead of Rs 305, while a butterscotch cone ice cream falls to Rs 30 from Rs 35. But don’t expect your regular pouch milk to get cheaper, as it has always been exempt from GST. The rate reduction is applicable to UHT milk — a one-litre toned tetra pack of milk will cost Rs 75, down from Rs 77.

Everyday poly pack milk (Full Cream Milk, Toned Milk, Cow Milk, etc) has always been exempted from GST and continues to be so, with no implications on its MRP, the dairy major said. As a consumer-centric organisation, we are passing on 100% of the tax benefit to our patrons, said Manish Bandlish, managing director of Mother Dairy. With Mother Dairy making the first big move to cut product prices under GST 2.0, consumers are waiting to see whether other FMCG majors will follow suit.

Products like ghee, butter, cheese, and milkshakes will now draw 5 per cent GST, down from 12 per cent. This will have a direct impact on the product cost. For instance, 100 gm of butter will cost Rs 58, down from Rs 62. The price of 200 gm of cheese slices will be reduced by Rs 10 starting September 22, down to 160.
