Kangana Ranaut Questions Her Political Path

Mumbai – Kangana Ranaut, the acclaimed actress who transitioned into politics as a Member of Parliament for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) from Mandi, Himachal Pradesh, recently shared her struggles with her new role during an interview on the YouTube podcast Atman in Ravi (AIR). The 39-year-old star, known for her bold performances and outspoken nature, admitted that her foray into politics has been far from fulfilling, describing it as a form of social service for which she feels ill-suited.

When asked about her adjustment to political life, Ranaut candidly stated, “I’m getting the hang of it, but I wouldn’t say I’m enjoying it. It’s a very different kind of work, more like social service, which hasn’t been my background.” She highlighted the challenges of addressing local issues, such as complaints about broken roads and drainage systems, which she finds overwhelming given her lack of experience in public service.

During the conversation, hosted by spiritual mentor Ravi V. Melwani, Ranaut was questioned about any aspirations to become India’s Prime Minister. She firmly dismissed the idea, saying, “I pray that never happens. I don’t think I’m competent to be the PM of India, nor do I have the passion or inclination for it.” Reflecting on her personal priorities, she added, “I’ve lived a very selfish life. I wanted a big house, a big car, diamonds, and to look good. That’s the kind of life I’ve led.”

Ranaut’s remarks come amid a challenging period in her career. Her recent film Emergency, where she portrayed former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and also served as director, received critical praise but failed to perform at the box office, earning only Rs 20 crore. Despite her on-screen portrayal of a powerful political figure, Ranaut emphasized her disinterest in pursuing such a role in real life, citing a lack of emotional investment for the demands of high-level leadership.

The actress-turned-politician also faced scrutiny for her absence from Mandi during recent cloudbursts and flash floods, which caused significant destruction in the region. Responding to criticism from BJP leader Jairam Thakur, Ranaut claimed on X that she was advised by Thakur to delay her visit until connectivity was restored. She assured constituents she would visit the affected areas as soon as authorities permitted.

Ranaut’s candid reflections reveal a complex transition from Bollywood to politics. While she continues to navigate her role as an MP, she remains clear about her personal aspirations, favoring a life of comfort over the sacrifices demanded by public service. As she adjusts to her new responsibilities, her journey underscores the challenges of balancing public expectations with personal identity.
