Mamdani Stands Firm Against Trump’s Deportation Threats

New York City’s Indian-origin mayoral candidate, Zohran Mamdani, has sharply rebuked U.S. President Donald Trump for threatening him with deportation, accusing the president of stoking division. The 33-year-old democratic socialist, who secured the Democratic nomination for mayor, claims Trump’s attacks are a tactic to divert attention from his administration’s policies that Mamdani says harm working-class Americans.

In a statement posted on X on July 2, 2025, Mamdani declared, “Donald Trump is attacking me because he is desperate to distract from his war on working people. We must and we will fight back.” This response came after Trump repeatedly targeted Mamdani, falsely questioning his citizenship and threatening legal action if he obstructs Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations.

Mamdani, born in Uganda to Indian parents and a U.S. citizen since 2018, has vowed to resist ICE raids in New York City, a pledge that has intensified the feud.

Mamdani expressed concern for undocumented immigrants, stating to The New York Times, “If this is what Donald Trump and his administration feel comfortable saying about the Democratic nominee for mayor of New York City, imagine what they feel comfortable saying and doing about immigrants whose names they don’t even know.” His comments highlight the broader implications of Trump’s rhetoric, suggesting it aims to intimidate those who challenge his policies.

The ongoing clash, reported by, underscores the escalating tensions between Trump and Mamdani as the November 2025 mayoral election approaches. Mamdani remains steadfast, emphasizing his commitment to protecting New Yorkers and opposing what he calls an assault on democratic values.
