Heavy Rainfall In Surat: Roads Flooded, Schools Closed And Red Alert Issued | Watch Video

Surat: Heavy rain has been lashing Surat since last night, submerging roads and low-lying areas in floodwater within just two hours, with nearly 6 inches of rain recorded. The sudden downpour brought the city to a standstill, prompting authorities to shut schools and issue a red alert for Surat and four nearby districts until 1 PM.

As with every monsoon season, the first major spell of rain has overwhelmed the city’s drainage system. Most areas across Surat have been waterlogged. Especially in neighborhoods like Morabhagal, floodwater levels have risen sharply, causing significant disruption. The Ashwinikumar canal has also been closed due to water overflow.

In light of the continuous rainfall, the district collector instructed education officials to declare a holiday for schools to ensure student safety. Morning sessions were suspended, and students were sent home early. Afternoon classes were also officially canceled.

Despite prior claims by Surat Municipal Corporation that the roads would remain clear this year, the current situation mirrors previous years. Continuous rain has forced civic teams to rush to affected areas to tackle waterlogging. Key junctions and areas like Katargam, Siganpor Char Rasta, Varachha, Udhna Char Rasta, and parts of Pandesara are among the worst hit.

The torrential rain, accompanied by strong winds, has brought much-needed relief from the summer heat but has also created significant problems for residents in low-lying areas. Commuters are facing difficulties as vehicles struggle through submerged roads. If rainfall continues with the same intensity, the situation could worsen, and authorities are urged to remain on high alert and prepare for further emergencies.
