Delhi Braces for Heavy Downpours as IMD Issues Yellow Alert, Orange Warnings for Eight States

New Delhi is set to experience significant rainfall on Sunday, June 22, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing a yellow alert for the capital, forecasting moderate showers over the next six to seven days. The IMD also announced an orange alert for eight states Assam, Madhya Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Tripura, and Uttar Pradesh indicating intense rainfall through June 26.
On Saturday, June 21, the weather agency had warned of “heavy to very heavy rainfall” across Northwest India, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, and the Konkan-Goa region, with the wet spell expected to persist until June 26. The IMD noted that conditions are favorable for the monsoon’s advancement into remaining parts of the North Arabian Sea, additional areas of Rajasthan, West Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, and sections of Jammu & Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan, Muzaffarabad, and Ladakh within the next two days.

Delhi is expected to see cloudy skies throughout the week, with the IMD’s yellow alert highlighting thunderstorms, lightning, and moderate to light rain continuing until June 27. The rainfall is anticipated to keep heatwave conditions at bay, while the city’s air quality has shown improvement, moving into the “satisfactory” category on Sunday morning. According to Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) data, Delhi’s Air Quality Index (AQI) was recorded at 83 at 9 a.m. on June 22, a notable shift from the “poor” levels observed in previous days.
