Tahira Kashyap Reflects on Financial Hardships in Early Marriage to Ayushmann Khurrana

Filmmaker Tahira Kashyap recently opened up about the financial challenges she faced during the early years of her marriage to actor Ayushmann Khurrana. In a interview, Tahira revealed how she depleted her personal savings to cover household expenses, a burden her husband was unaware of at the time.

Tahira and Ayushmann, married in 2008 at the age of 24, moved to Mumbai as young newlyweds. While Ayushmann was beginning his career as a VJ, Tahira struggled to find employment, relying on her savings to manage their household. “I had spent some money on my wedding, but I had my own savings,” she shared. “But I didn’t have a job in Mumbai. We had just gotten married, and I was still applying for jobs.”

For an entire year, Tahira single-handedly funded their groceries, including vegetables and fruits, without Ayushmann realizing the financial strain she was under. “This boy did not understand how we were getting the food, like how we were buying all of these vegetables, fruits,” she said. Her savings dwindled rapidly, and within a year, her bank balance reached zero. Having always been financially independent, Tahira found it difficult to ask for help, even from her parents.

The turning point came when Ayushmann innocently asked why she hadn’t bought mangoes, unaware that Tahira had been sacrificing her own share to ensure he could enjoy them. The question pushed her to the breaking point, leading to an emotional breakdown. “I was so angry,” she recalled. This moment prompted a conversation that made Ayushmann realize the extent of her sacrifices and the need to share household responsibilities more equitably.

Tahira also shared that her breast cancer, first diagnosed in 2018, had relapsed in April 2025. She has been open about her health journey on social media, providing updates and inspiring others with her resilience. The couple, who have been together since their school days, share two children, a son named Virajveer and a daughter named Varushka. Their enduring partnership continues to navigate life’s challenges with mutual support.
