Watch: Pre-Monsoon Showers Hit Mumbai With Gusty Winds, IMD Issues Yellow Alert

Mumbai experienced its first spell of pre-monsoon rainfall on Tuesday night, bringing much-needed relief from the intense summer heat. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) had earlier forecast light rain and thunderstorms for the region, placing Mumbai, Thane, and Palghar under a Yellow Alert.
Several areas across the city including Dahisar, Jogeshwari, Borivali, Bandra, Kurla, and Powai saw late-night showers accompanied by thunder and lightning. Dust storms and overcast skies had been present throughout the day, hinting at the approaching change in weather.
According to the IMD, light showers and cloudy conditions are expected to continue through May 8 and 9. The current weather shift is attributed to western disturbances drawing in moisture, increasing the likelihood of more pre-monsoon activity across Maharashtra.
Other parts of the state also witnessed varied weather patterns. Nashik’s Sinnar and Lasalgaon regions were hit by a hailstorm, while Gujarat has already been experiencing heavy pre-monsoon rains for two consecutive days. An Orange Alert has now been issued for Vidarbha districts, where more intense thunderstorms are expected than in Mumbai.
Despite the rainfall, humidity levels in Mumbai remain high. On Tuesday, the Santacruz observatory recorded the city’s highest minimum temperature of the year at 28.9°C 2.5°C above normal. The maximum temperature stood at 34°C.
An updated nowcast warning issued by IMD Mumbai at 9:35 pm on May 6 cautioned of thunderstorms with lightning and moderate rain, along with gusty winds reaching speeds of 50–60 kmph, likely to impact isolated areas in Mumbai City, Mumbai Suburban, Thane, Palghar, and Nashik over the next few hours. Residents are advised to exercise caution when outdoors.
