Bengaluru: For many Indians living abroad, the dream of settling overseas often comes with one difficult compromise being away from family. A Bengaluru based engineering leader has now reignited that conversation after revealing why he gave up his life in Canada and returned to India to be with his ageing parents.
The emotional post, shared by Ramesh NN, Director of Engineering at Corcentric, has struck a chord with thousands on LinkedIn. His story isn’t about abandoning a career abroad; it’s about choosing something he believes is far more valuable time with family.
Ramesh said he moved back to Bengaluru nearly six years ago after spending years in Canada. While the decision meant walking away from a comfortable lifestyle and the opportunities that came with it, he said he has never regretted it.
According to him, success is often measured by where someone lives, the salary they earn or the passport they hold. But over time, he realised those achievements meant little if he couldn’t be there for the people who mattered most.
“Being physically present for my parents and sharing everyday moments with them changed my perspective completely,” he wrote, adding that true fulfilment comes from being where you are needed rather than simply chasing professional milestones.
His reflections quickly gained traction online, with many users saying they could relate to the emotional dilemma faced by professionals living overseas. Several people admitted they constantly struggle with the guilt of being thousands of kilometres away from ageing parents, while others said his post reminded them that time lost with loved ones can never be recovered.
For Ramesh, returning to Bengaluru also proved that moving back to India no longer has to mean sacrificing one’s career. The city’s thriving technology sector allowed him to continue growing professionally while remaining close to his family.
His story comes at a time when more Indian professionals are reconsidering life abroad. Recently, another Bengaluru based technology executive, Balaji Gururajan, also made headlines after returning to India following an 18 year career in the United States, citing family, ageing parents and the desire to raise his children around relatives as key reasons for the move.
The growing conversations around such decisions reflect a changing mindset among many members of the Indian diaspora. While international careers continue to attract talent, an increasing number of professionals are placing greater value on emotional well-being, family support systems and quality of life.
Ramesh’s message ultimately wasn’t about encouraging everyone to return home. Instead, it served as a reminder that career success is deeply personal and that for some, the greatest achievement isn’t a promotion or a foreign address it’s being present for the people who have always been there for them.
In a world where ambition often takes centre stage, his story has reminded many that some moments with family simply cannot be postponed and no amount of professional success can bring those moments back once they’re gone.
